James M. Smith is a partner in Squire, Sanders & Dempsey L.L.P., an international law firm having over 800 attorneys in offices in North and South America, Asia and Europe. Mr. Smith counsels and represents clients in all phases of litigation and in their efforts to avoid the substantial burdens imposed by litigation. Mr. Smith’s practice encompasses the protection of intellectual property including patents, trademarks and copyrights, product liability litigation, complex business litigation, trade secret misappropriation, and unfair competition including antitrust, unfair advertising and illegal pricing.

For 17 years, Mr. Smith has served both US and foreign-based clients in Silicon Valley and other US jurisdictions. His experience includes trials in federal and state courts and numerous arbitrations. More often, he has been able to achieve a successful result on behalf of his clients without having to try the dispute in court.

Mr. Smith received both his undergraduate degree (A.B., with High Distinction and Phi Beta Kappa, Class of ‘85) and law degree (J.D., Class of ‘88) from the University of California at Berkeley.
